GL Bajaj Institute of Management & Research. PGDM Institute, Greater Noida in association with Popcorn Flicks and International Chamber of Professional Education & Industry organized a session on "The Way Webseries is Opening up New Creative Outlets to Create Content and the OTT Boom in CoVid Times" on Monday, December 21, 2020 for the students of PGDM Batch 2019-21 & 2020-22 under the patronage of Mr. Pankaj Agarwal, Vice Chairman, GL Bajaj Educational Institutions. The guest speakers of the session were Mr. Amit R Agarwal, Showrunner & Screenwriter; Ms. Ajita Kulkarni, Renowned Actress of Badhai Ho Badhai, Simmba Fame, Ye Hai Mohabbatein Serial & many others and Ms. Laila Pannda, who acted in over 500 Ad Films, Ad Film with Akshay Kumar.
The session started with an invocation to Goddess Saraswati. Dr. Ajay Kumar, Director, GLBIMR shared that Covid-19 had created a lot of fear initially but it also opened various opportunities to be explored in different sectors. He shared that the entertainment sector had seen immense growth in the last few months in terms of OTT platforms which had emerged as a big industry nowadays. He further elaborated that even paid subscriptions had increased for NETFLIX and Amazon in past few months.
During the session, Mr. Amit R Agarwal discussed the major problems which producers faced during lockdown and shared that due to the total shutdown of cinemas globally; there was no scope for new films to get released. He added that in such scenarios, OTT’s come into play and helped the producers in a big way. He shared that OTT’s had seen immense growth over the recent months but cinema halls would sustain in the long run as no OTT platform could match the charm and ambience of theatres.
Ms. Ajita Kulkarni shared that OTT’s had totally captivated the audience in recent times due to their variety of shows and diverse creative content. She elaborated that during lockdown, the people didn’t had options to watch movies in theatres which increased the viewership of OTT platforms to a great extent. She added that production of regional shows had also increased to attract the audience from small towns and villages. She further stated that OTT platforms had provided huge opportunities to the actors to explore diverse roles.
Ms. Laila Pannda shared that Covid-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to the OTT platforms for their expansion and growth. She stated that OTT had grown steadily as audiences need diversity and wanted to watch meaningful and realistic content. She also emphasized that although cinemas were closed during lockdown, they would sustain forever because it provided a different kind of pleasure and ambience to the audience. She further added that OTT had given various opportunities to the actors to showcase their talent. At the end, Mr. Amit R Agarwal, Ms. Ajita Kulkarni and Ms. Laila Pannda were awarded with an Honorary Membership of ICPEI as a token of appreciation for their valuable contribution towards industry-academia collaboration.
This session exposed the students about new creative outlets to create content and the OTT boom in Covid times. The session also celebrated 25 million views in 2 years and launch of Season 1 on various OTT’s worldwide by 69 Opposites Attract.
